REQUIREMENTS FOR SECURING A MARRIAGE LICENSE IN GEORGIA
1. You must be at least eighteen (18) years old to apply without parental consent. You may
be sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) with parental consent. Either parents or your custodial
parent must sign for you if you are underage. The parents must accompany the minor
applying for the marriage license and must have proper identification, such as a valid
driver's license. Underage female applicants who are pregnant may apply without
parental consent. A letter from a doctor who practices here in Chatham County must be
presented at the time of the application. The doctor's letter must state that she is
pregnant, how far along she is and her estimated due date. This letter must be on the
doctor's letterhead with his/her original signature, not a stamped signature.
2. All applicants must present a positive I. D. This may be either a Driver's License, a
certified copy of a Birth Certificate, a Military I. D., a Passport, or a State I. D. card. Not
acceptable are Social Security Cards, Insurance Cards, and Credit Cards, Work or School
I. D. cards.
3. Blood tests are not required to procure a marriage license.
4. If either applicant has received a Divorce within the past six (6) months, please bring a
certified copy of the Judgment and Decree with the Judge's signature on the order, along
with you when applying for your marriage license.
5. Marriage Licenses are issued between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. in the Probate
Court of Chatham County, 133 Montgomery St., Room 509, Savannah, GA 31401.
6. Both the Bride and the Groom must be present at the same time in order to apply for the
Marriage License. The fee for the Marriage License is $51.00. You will need the exact
amount in cash or a personal check is acceptable. To receive the recorded copy by mail,
also bring a self-addressed stamped envelope.
7. There is no waiting period in Georgia; you will receive your license at the time you
apply. The license is good indefinitely.
